[About Moon Raven]

One of the many questions I get asked is why Moon Raven? It's a long story, that revolves around a picture I drew on a Commodore Amiga A500 using Electronic Arts DeluxePaint II a lifetime ago:-

Around the birth of the world-wide web, I was working for the first dedicated business internet service provider, Xara Networks. The domain "moon-raven.co.uk", crudely representing that picture, seemed like a natural domain to be deployed for my personal e-mail.

Moving forward, it was used for a variety of different personal and professional projects, including a fairly successful urban fiction website. The logo also appears on the headstock and sound hole of a guitar I customised during extensive traditional music sessions in the early naughties - including the Monedie Kitchen sessions (see below). The guitar itself continues to be used by my son and has featured on many of his own albums and recordings.

As information security and digital services became more important to my day job, the moon-raven.co.uk domain was then deployed into a long-running, but ultimately ill-fated technology programme, called "BladeSec Weaponised" in 2019 that featured two hardware appliances:-

  • Rapier was developed to properly segment an untrusted and trusted network link that often plagued satellite offices and schools in Local Authorities. It had a very special use-case for GSX compliance.
  • Sabre was an e-mail proxy with considerable anti-spam, anti-fraud, anti-malware and sacrificial sandboxing.
[About mr-mail.net]

The domain mr-mail.net was used as an abbreviation for "Moon-Raven Mail" and is broadly identical in form and function, but just a bit more professional in appearance. It may be worth noting The Simpsons' "Mr. Plow" episode added another dimension.

I had to wait a while to register mr-mail.net as it had been previously registered. The previous owner of "mr-mail.net" appeared to be French, who's initials were indeed "M.R.".

[About Monedie]

I should probably point out that Musings from Monedie was named after the house where we lived - Monedie House. It was a huge old rambling farmhouse in rural Aberdeenshire. We had great adventures there, whether it was the Christmas for everybody that nowhere else to go, my wife's significant birthday in the byre, the Monedie Kitchen traditional music sessions or the Hallowe'en parties we used to host for the entirety of Rothiemay Primary School.

[About the content]

I do not have written permission to host everything that is on this website. For some, I may have a verbal "aye alright" or a tacit lack of objection. It is my sincere belief given the age of much of this, those involved would bless my intentions, but if they so wish, they may contact me and I will be very happy to take any offending material down.

For the avoidance of doubt, I would not run or deploy any code, scripts or configurations pre-2021. Your mileage may vary even for more up-to-date material.

I am aware, that much material published here has very specific flaws, that I either (i) ignored; or (ii) worked around. They were a product of my experience and vocation at the time. They are intend as intellectual curiosities - nothing more. No bug reports will be accepted.

[About links]

Links to external content are provided without warranty for your information and occasionally your enjoyment. Clearly, there is material here going back almost half a century, so many websites and information will no longer be accurate or even available. You should check other sources before deciding the content here is anything else other than my own views at the time.

Some links may have been updated, but may not be to the specific content from the time the entry was originally made. Please be sensible.

Some links may be disarmed by using square brackets on one or more periods within it. Modern convention uses this to prevent accidental access to a malicious website, however I have used it to highlight a website that doesn't exist any longer with no suitable replacement.
